Basement Waterproofing

A basement is designed to add storage space as well as living space. So it is a desirable addition to a home. However, basements are the most likely to flood as they are closed in areas and sits at the lowest part of your home. A moist basement can be caused by any number of problems, including lack of waterproofing. The most common cause is something called hydrostatic pressure. It is a term for the soil that absorbs water and retains it. Another common cause of a wet basement is a heavy rain. In this case the soil can become oversaturated with moisture and then your basement can become flooded. Sometimes a careless man will not notice his broken pipes until it comes to a leaking business. When a wet basement occurs, it will become a major problem. A damp basement can add to humidity throughout the house and promote allergic discomfort. It also creates a perfect environment for the termite activity. As a homeowner, you should beware that properly waterproofing your basement is an important part of protecting against flooding so that you can have a healthier home environment for your family. There are several simple things you can do by yourself even without professionals. When it comes to basement waterproofing methods, using waterproofing paints is one of the cheapest options. While it is quite cheap, it is not always the best choice as the paint does not last very long. Another basement waterproofing you may hear about is using black tar. But it has the same disadvantage with using waterproofing paints. A better choice is rubberized membranes. You can use a sprayer, or a roller to apply the membranes. It is easy to do yourself. One of the more expensive basement waterproofing methods is the exterior foundation drains. They are installed around the foundation and help any water to be diverted away. This method is an extremely effective and good choice for those who live in the area where it rains a lot. While it is a bit more expensive than some of the other methods. Once you have a proper basement waterproofing, you will enjoy an increased living space and have a more comfortable home.
